The location of bumpers is influenced by the pier's design and the sorts of vessels that utilize the dock. A cushioned edging around the circumference of a pleasure boat dock with pilings (vertical support posts) underneath it, or a floating dock without pilings, for example. If the pilings are exposed, though, you'll likely need to add padded bumpers to the pilings as well as some protective edging to the dock's edges. Bumpers can range from low-tech, specialized molded composite components as cool as the boat they cover to high-tech, specialty molded composite materials.
