Most powerboats and PWC have emergency engine cut-off switches installed by the manufacturer (ECOS). If worn appropriately, this safety gear can stop the engine if the operator is ejected from the appropriate operating position or falls off the vessel. A lanyard attaches the ECOS to the operator's wrist or PFD. The engine will turn off when the lanyard is withdrawn from the switch. Most states mandate that when operating a PWC, the operator always wears an ECOS. Even though it is not required by law, attaching the lanyard could save many lives. You should install an ECOS if your powerboat or PWC does not already have one. There may be a self-circling function on your PWC. The PWC's engine idles while it gently circles while the operator can reboard if they are flung from it. Make sure the idle speed is well-calibrated correctly.
