Fuel filters on outboard engines serve two purposes. The first is to filter out particles in the fuel before it is injected or drawn into the engine for combustion, as the name implies. The second function is to serve as a water separator. Water frequently enters the fuel storage tanks due to marine conditions, and a good fuel filter limits the amount of water that enters the engine. Outboard engine fuel filters are mostly screw-on or inline, though some outboards use a screen in the engine's fuel pump to keep particles out of the engine. The engine shroud must be removed when changing the fuel filter. Identify the inline fuel filter. Locate the inline fuel filter by following the fuel line. It will be connected to the engine's incoming line. Remove the fuel system's pressure. It is sufficient to disconnect the outboard's fuel connection.
