The air departs from a closed cylindrical resonator chamber through a finely formed slit directed against a knife-edge in air horns used on ships rather than through a diaphragm (fipple). Because it just takes one blow from the user to produce a sound that will make you attempt if you have a horn. It is used when needed and it will never run out of air, as long as you don't. It can also be a backup for your ship's horn in an emergency, or it can be stored in your ditch bag.
