The marine engine water pump delivers the whole amount of cooling water required to prevent overheating. It can be accomplished either directly in an open-cooled engine or indirectly through the heat exchanger in a closed-cooled engine.
An outboard water pump typically includes a rubber impeller, wear plate, stainless steel cup or insert, and a few gaskets and o-rings to seal everything around and within a housing. The water pump housing's cup is the insert or liner.
