The spring contains a wire with a circular cross. In engines, the starting rope drags downward the recoil spring expands out owing to the pull-off of line in the pulley. Continuous loops allow the machine to be moved fast and securely toward combustion while enabling the operator to pull the cord continually.
The recoil spring is connected to the pulley through a hook in the middle of the pulley. It expands away when the starting rope is lifted off the pulley and out of the engine. The recoil spring snaps back, and the rope recoils onto the pulley when the operator lets go of the cord.
