The steering cable is linked to a plate with teeth on one side. A rod connects to the steering wheel. It has a gear at the end that fits inside the teeth of the steering cable plate.
The rack and pinion system is the most prevalent in boating. The helm includes an extruded profile pinion gear that engages a pre-assembled rack and cable, driving an armored-standard core for decreased steering effort. It utilizes a chain in a rack and pinion steering system, but there is no direct connection between the engine and the helm.
