Crankshaft keys, sometimes known as woodruff keys, are detachable, semicircular-shaped keys that fit into keyways that have been carved into the crankshaft and leave projecting tabs. These tabs fit flat against the shaft into corresponding slots on the harmonic balancer. They are unable to roll around in the seat, which aids in the harmonic balancer's guidance and prevents it from freely revolving about the shaft. The use of the Woodruff key has the benefit of removing milling around the shaft shoulders, which can influence concentricity and stress concentration, both of which are crucial for high-speed operation. The reliability of the key is also increased by properly fitting the keyway and key.
