The ignition system on your Johnson outboard boat motor is centered on the power pack. The power pack provides voltage to the ignition system's power coils. A defective or dead power pack can cause troubles starting your Johnson outboard. To check a Johnson Power Pack, connect each of the multimeter's leads to the ends of the orange wires that flow from the power packs to the ignition coils — connect the positive to the orange wires and the negative to the ignition coil's negative terminal (-). A voltage reading of at least 150V is required.
