One of the quickest signs that the shift assist module has failed is that getting the outdrive out of gear without shutting off the engine is practically impossible. If you continue to force it, the shift cable will stretch, and the drive will be ruined because of the shift linkage misalignment and failure to fully engage. The outdrive will bang out of gear when you try to accelerate as an indication of this.
By restricting engine RPM, the electronic shift assist decreases shifting effort. Shifting is also smoother as a result of this. The electronic shift assist turns off when the vertical drive is fully engaged in forward or reverse gear.
